Lisa Russo Pettigrew is a dancer, writer, performer and educator. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from Mills College, is a certified Life/Art® Practitioner, a Registered Expressive Arts Consultant/Educator (REACE), & Somatic Movement Therapist (RSMT).  She has had the great privilege of working with The Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, Deborah Riley Dance Projects in Washington D.C., Merce Cunningham Dance Foundation  and dance pioneer, Anna Halprin.  She has piloted, directed, consulted, and facilitated community workshops and classes for various institutions and organizations throughout the country & has taught & performed nationally & internationally for several decades.

In 2003, Lisa founded Forward Movement – an arts & healing collective, which served a variety of populations in Northern California.  That collective grew into The Gutai Foundation, founded in 2013 and was granted its 501c3 status the summer of 2014.  After giving birth to all of this she finally became a Mom in Spring of 2014 to her precious daughter Agee and then again in November of 2016 to her beloved twins, Daxton and Izzy.  She is just now resurfacing and will begin offering work in her Lake Arrowhead and Orange County communities.

| artist’s statement |

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by human behavior and the way we express our life stories.  The expressive arts has guided me, personally & professionally, to find meaningful connections with how stories are formed and how they can transform us.

I believe we are all born with an innate desire to connect. For me, this is a primal need and it extends first to self and then out with a passion thru my art in service of and in respect to and with individuals, groups, and communities.

I am committed to making a difference.  I believe in the power of the creative process and that creativity and creative expression can be a problem solving tool and a force for change.

Knowing that the arts are healing and that when art is used in and as medicine it can provide profound experiences that hold the potential to bring each of us closer and closer to ourselves anchors me.  This process has been described by those I serve as an unimagined gift.

To know something in and through the body is to be embodied. I believe we each have this awareness. To utilize the arts as the link to this knowing is at the core of what I bring to my leadership in the work.
